MADE IN THE 216 [what I picked up!]

Finally getting around to posting about what I bought at the Made in the 216 event and grand opening of the Dredgers Union. The entire concept of both is so awesome and I think it’s really important to spread the word about the awesome brands that are created in Northeast Ohio as well as in the US of A…it’s good for the community.

There was so much to choose from. I wish I could have bought EVERYTHING, especially those Anni Shades…one day.

This is merely just a sampling of what was and is actually still available.

From Made in the 216:

From top to bottom: 1820 House candle, C.L.E. Clothing Co. LOVE OHIO tank, Arterx District Collection prints, Grey Cardigan Rosemary & Poppy print

From the Dredgers Union:

From top to bottom: the Dredgers Union label striped tie, Around travel journal — both can still be purchased at the Dredgers Union

NEW GOODS + ROOM SERVICE

As mentioned, Thirsty was present at the Made in the 216 event this year. The creative mastermind behind the event, Danielle DeBoe, is also the owner of a local boutique in Cleveland called Room Service. I fell in love with Room Service when it first opened it’s doors in 2007 in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. I would pop in semi-regularly and admire the beautiful products and buy them for myself and as gifts for others. Since I always had Thirsty in the back of my mind, I would imagine my goods in the shop. Well, that day has finally arrived and I am pleased to say that you can shop Thirsty goods at Room Service (products should be on the floor soon)! The boutique is now in Ohio City in a much larger space than before. And it’s still my go-to place for that unique gift. Stop by Room Service and pick up Thirsty for yourself or someone else — a friend, a neighbor, your crush, a loved one, anyone.

MADE IN THE 216 [recap]

This past weekend was the Made in the 216 event at the Dredgers Union. And it was FUN! Not only was it entertaining with the circus theme (you can see all pictures with clown noses here), but there were so many awesome goods available for purchase – jewelry, furniture, candles, tees, stationery, prints, lighting AND MORE – all made right here in the 216 (Northeast Ohio)!

I’m so grateful to have had Thirsty included amongst the bunch. I was so excited, I made it a weekend affair! Friday was the opening party and before it started I popped in early to check it out with a good friend, Cathy Hunt. Later that evening, I was joined by some family and also met up with Piper of One Sydney Road (photographic evidence below), Saturday, my design twin + friend since the late 90s, Noelle of Endash Creative, joined us and Sunday more family. Overall, a pretty good time and a great success.

Tomorrow or Friday, I will post what I purchased from the event. Stay tuned…

For now, check out some shots of the space, some new Thirsty product, which will be in the shop soon, and a little more.

If you went, what were your favorite items? Anything from Thirsty that you love?

I’M THIRSTY FOR…

After the most fabulously relaxing and enjoyable, actually in-town (which has been rare lately) and work-free (stress-free, responsibility-free) weekend I experienced over the holiday, I can indeed call it an overall pretty good time. That may even be an understatement. In fact, I’m going to be greedy and try to go two-for-two this weekend. Sometimes, you gotta put yourself first over everything else, clear your mind and just live. Cheers!

And now, another little reminder to those who are thirsty for retail therapy and some good times:

  • If you happen to be in the market for some retail therapy, a new store just opened in downtown Cleveland: the Dredgers Union. The official grand opening party is Friday, July 8 and the store will also serve as the location for this summer’s Made in the 216 event the same weekend. Thirsty is one of the artists at the event. Make sure you stop by and check out the goods!

THIRSTY FOR INDEPENDENCE

The July desktop calendar salutes our Independence Day, here in the good old USA. We may officially celebrate July 4, but I know we’re all so thankful for our independence and freedom each and every day. And beyond grateful for the men and women who have fought for it and continue to do so. I’m especially thankful for the simple liberties during such intense times across the world.

While I’m celebrating (picking the seeds out of watermelon, enjoying some beverages, watching fireworks and spraying myself with bug repellant) I will be thankful I can do so.

Have a safe and happy Fourth and enjoy the calendar all month long.

GETTING PERSONAL [nerves]

Today, as I sit here with my sketch for the July desktop calendar, I thought I’d use my procrastination wisely and express something that I’ve dealt with forever, creatively, in hopes that either I’m not completely alone or that it helps me deal with it and pushes me to just get started already! Nothing like talkin’ it out…

For as long as I can remember, I get sick to my stomach and totally nervous as I attempt to sit down to start a design project. I’ve been this way my entire life, from the high school art assignments to working at design firms and in advertising all the way to now, designing for Pastore Studio clients and creating goods from my heart for Thirsty.

And I thought it would actually go away when I started creating things on my own terms with Thirsty. Not at all. The blank canvas is so limitless, yet so intimidating.

I try to get rid of the nerves by putting the work off and procrastinating a bit. Who am I kidding, as long as possible. Hey, I work best under extreme pressure (I don’t think this is actually good for my heart or stress levels). But the feeling never goes away until I START and get some solid ideas. The nervousness finally subsides and I can get really excited about whatever direction it’s about to take and produce some quality work. I sit back and think, well that wasn’t so difficult, was it?

And it never is, after the fact. But I don’t know why I go through this process every.single.time. I’m hoping to just let it go and not be like this anymore, but I’m not sure if that’s even possible.

It may just be a part of my creative process and if it helps me create something that I know I put my heart and mind into, then so be it. I’ll own it.

Every creative has their own methods they practice, good or bad, before starting the process or during. What do you feel are your weaknesses or strengths in the process of working, getting by or creating?

— Maria

[author's note: By no means do I miss actual hard deadlines for PS clients or at any other point in my design career. The Thirsty deadlines are my own, so that's my problem. And once I do get started on a project, the work is never compromised and the options are never limited if the time is less due to living in a procrastination nation. I live, breathe and die for giving my all.]
